Resume Format Guide
Chronological Format (Most Recommended)
The chronological format lists your work history from newest to oldest. It's the most popular format, preferred by 85% of recruiters, and the most ATS-friendly. Use this if you have: consistent work history, progressive career growth, and experience in the same field. Structure: Summary → Experience → Education → Skills.
Functional Format (Skills-Based)
The functional format groups experience by skill category rather than timeline. While it can highlight transferable skills, most recruiters dislike it because it looks like you're hiding something: gaps, job hopping, or lack of recent experience. Use sparingly and only when: making a complete career change, re-entering after a long gap, or military-to-civilian transition.
Combination/Hybrid Format
The combination format blends the best of both: a skills section at the top followed by a chronological work history. This is ideal for: experienced professionals pivoting roles, candidates with diverse skill sets, or senior professionals demonstrating both breadth and depth. Structure: Summary → Core Competencies → Experience → Education.
Choosing the Right Format
Quick decision tree: Do you have 2+ years of relevant experience? → Chronological. Are you changing careers completely? → Combination. Are you a recent graduate? → Chronological with Education first. Have a gap of 2+ years? → Combination. For 90% of job seekers, chronological is the safest and most effective choice.
