Action Verbs for Your Resume

Why Action Verbs Matter

Strong action verbs make your resume concise and impactful. "Led a team of 12 engineers" is stronger than "Was responsible for managing a team." Action verbs show what you did, not what your job description said. They signal initiative, ownership, and results.

Leadership & Management

Directed, Led, Managed, Oversaw, Supervised, Coordinated, Mentored, Guided, Orchestrated, Spearheaded, Chaired, Delegated, Facilitated, Mobilized, Championed, Steered, Empowered, Cultivated, Established, Founded. Use these when describing team leadership, project management, or organizational initiatives.

Achievement & Results

Achieved, Exceeded, Surpassed, Delivered, Accomplished, Attained, Generated, Produced, Earned, Won, Accelerated, Boosted, Improved, Increased, Enhanced, Maximized, Outperformed, Transformed, Doubled, Tripled. These are perfect for quantified accomplishments: "Generated $3.2M in new revenue."

Technical & Engineering

Built, Developed, Engineered, Architected, Designed, Implemented, Programmed, Deployed, Automated, Optimized, Debugged, Configured, Integrated, Migrated, Refactored, Modernized, Scaled, Containerized, Provisioned, Instrumented. Use context-specific verbs that match your technical domain.

Analysis & Research

Analyzed, Evaluated, Assessed, Investigated, Researched, Examined, Identified, Discovered, Diagnosed, Audited, Benchmarked, Forecasted, Mapped, Measured, Modeled, Quantified, Surveyed, Tested, Validated, Verified. Great for data-driven roles, consulting, and research positions.

Communication & Collaboration

Presented, Communicated, Negotiated, Persuaded, Authored, Published, Advocated, Briefed, Consulted, Counseled, Educated, Influenced, Liaised, Mediated, Pitched, Promoted, Reported, Translated, Unified, Collaborated. Essential for client-facing, sales, marketing, and cross-functional roles.

Words to Avoid

Remove these weak fillers from your resume: Responsible for, Helped with, Assisted in, Participated in, Worked on, Handled, Utilized (use "Used"), Leveraged (overused), Synergized (meaningless), Various, Numerous. Replace every instance with a specific, strong action verb that shows your actual contribution.
